The Collins Dictionary defines a mentor as a wise or trusted adviser or guide. There are a large number of well known mentors operating in the business world. Generally they provide experience for the person being mentored that would not otherwise be available.
The mentor will likely meet the client once a month to discuss issues that have arisen since the last meeting. With electronic developments contact by email, phone or other means can also be arranged.
The objective is to help the client to develop his skills without spending huge amounts of time on the process.
